CHAPTER 31
A cold snout pushes into my ear, rousing me from sleep. I was possessed last night. Zeppelin is clearly ready for attention. He leaps onto the bed and demands morning snuggles. As I pet him, I struggle to remember what went down last night in my temple. A knock on the door, followed by Stephenâs voice interrupts my thoughts, âLeda, are you up?â
âYeah, come in!â
âYou wanna have breakfast before I head to the airport?â He peeks around the door.
âSure. Are Sebastian and Alan awake?â
âWhat?â Stephen questions, narrowing his eyes.
âAre Sebastian and Alan awake?â I repeat.
Stephen steps fully into the room and flashes a puzzled look. âHow drunk were you last night?â When I donât respond, he continues, âSebastian left after the party. You told me you saw him off. And Alanâ¦Alanâs in New York as far as I know.â He squints. âAre you naked?â
âOh,â is all I can muster. If Stephenâs telling the truth, then Iâve lost time memory because I sure donât remember seeing Sebastian off. âIâll meet you on the patio for breakfast.â
I wash my face and peer in the mirror while patting a dry towel over my chin. My appearance has been altered. Itâs still me but my cheeks are a little higher, my blond hair a bit more lustrous. Yesterday, my eyes were brown, but this morning, I lean closer to the mirror, theyâre mahogany and brighter. And my lips, I run my index finger along my bottom lip, is plumper. I turn from the mirror, mentally scrolling through what I can remember of last night while padding down the hallway to the back terrace to join Stephen for breakfast.
Thereâs no evidence of the pool party. The space is immaculate, the pool crystal clear, the decorations taken down. Everything back to normal.
âMe and a hammam from Tempe played baseball deep into the fourth inning,â Stephen grins while buttering an English muffin.
âEw. Spare me the metaphors and details, please,â I beg before asking Marisol for a bloody mary.â
Stephen, with a wicked smile, bites into a poached egg. âI love Sebastian, but Iâm glad we can finally eat a meal with animal products. One can only take so much tofu and beans.â He stops chewing and examines me. âSomethingâs different.â
âWhatcha mean?â I feign ignorance, salting an egg.
âI donât know. You look different.â
âIs that a good thing?â
âUm, yeah. Yeah. Sophisticated. More sophisticated, somehow.â
âOkay, Iâll take sophisticated.â Iâm eager to get off this topic.
âI thought you were going to spend two days with me? Why are you leaving a day early?â
âAlan really needs my help.â He shrugs. Stephen loves to be needed.
âHave you instructed the captain and crew youâre flying out today?â
âSent a text early this morning. Iâll head out as soon as I shower.â
After a few more bites of egg and munching on bacon, he asks, âWhen do you plan on returning to New York? Alan wanted me to find out.â
âI told Alan I need a month in Arizona. I wish heâd stop pressuring me. New York is for business; Arizona for creativity.
